With the holidays around the corner, popular gift items such as consumer drones and quadcopters are being bought at an ever-increasing rate. Analysts have predicted that over two million new drones will be crowding our skies by 2016. With this technology becoming more and more mainstream new regulations have been issued to monitor and hold irresponsible drone pilots accountable. The FAA drone registration is being released on December twenty-first for quadcopters and drones weighing over .55 pounds and under 55 pounds, including payload like an on board camera(s).
“If you own a drone, you must register it with the Federal Aviation Administration’s Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) registry. A federal law effective December 21, 2015 requires unmanned aircraft registration, and you are subject to civil and criminal penalties if you do not register.” –FAA
The move is addressing a real up coming problem; pilots who neglect rules and regulation go unpunished, making the drone community look bad. With this new FAA regulation for drones it will help regulate the upcoming surge in quadcopter and drone use. The implementation of the FAA’s drone registration will help bring offenders that abuse the privilege of flying a drone or quadcopter to justice and prevent spying on neighbors and other illicit actions.
The FAA drone registration will cost 5 dollars and last 3 years, but for those who register within the first 30 days of the opening of the registry will have the fee waived. This is all being done in anticipation of the hundreds of drones being purchased over the holiday season and a great method of informing new comers with the rules and responsibilities pilots have. This is all an effort to be able to keep communities safe, especially after all the drone incidences that have been publicized on TV.
